Started in 2023, Escape LA is a bikepacking event that aims to highlight some of LA’s best dirt, while taking riders through a juxtaposition of landscapes and experiences. One mile you’re rock-hopping trying to keep feet dry while bushwacking down a creek, and four miles later you’re merging in traffic trying to get to the left turn lane to get to an In-N-Out.
Ocean and San Field Guide Jamie Tinnin recaps his Escape from LA.
This year’s race (not a race) was 310ish miles with +45000ish feet of climbing (and descending!). Being a recent transplant to LA, I was familiar with about 10% of the route, but kept hearing that it was going to be hard. I was most looking forward to getting deeper into the Santa Monica Mountains via the backbone trail and seeing the San Gabriels, north of LA.
